Moving Into Your New Home? Here's the Ultimate Packing and Prep Guide
There is nothing quite like getting the keys to a home that was built specifically for you. At Two Structures, we have walked hundreds of Oklahoma City homeowners through move-in day, and we can tell you this — a smooth move is not about luck. It is about having a solid plan.
Here is our ultimate guide to making your move as seamless as possible.
Start Early — Earlier Than You Think
Most people underestimate how long packing actually takes. Start at least three to four weeks before your move date. Begin with items you do not use daily — seasonal decor, extra linens, storage closets, garage items — and work your way toward the everyday essentials. This keeps things manageable and helps you avoid the last-minute scramble.
Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load. There is no sense in hauling things into your new home that you did not want in your old one. As you go through each room, create three piles: keep, donate, and toss. You will save time, money, and space — and your new home will feel more intentional from day one.

Pack Smart, Not Fast
A little organization now saves a lot of frustration later. Label every box with the room and a brief description. Use color-coded stickers for each room. Keep similar items together and resist the urge to overpack — especially boxes of books or kitchen items. When you are unpacking in your new Two Structures home and everything is exactly where you expected it, you will be glad you took the extra few minutes.
Pack a First Night Box
This is one of the most overlooked steps in the entire process. Before anything else gets loaded onto the truck, set aside a box or two with the essentials you will need right away — toiletries, medications, phone chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, and bedding. After a long move day, the last thing you want is to dig through 40 boxes to find your toothbrush.
Handle the Logistics Before Move Day
A smooth move is not just about packing. It is about preparation. Transfer utilities before move-in day, update your address for mail and accounts, schedule internet installation, and confirm your moving company timing or reserve your truck early. In a fast-growing market like Oklahoma City, availability fills up quickly — the earlier you lock things in, the better.
Do a Final Walkthrough Before You Unload
Before the first box comes off the truck, walk through your new home. Check that everything from your final walkthrough or inspection is complete, confirm that outlets, lights, and appliances are working, and make sure floors and surfaces are clean. If you built with Two Structures, we have already walked through this with you — but one more look before things get busy is always a good idea.

Clean Before You Unpack
Even in a brand-new home, a quick wipe-down goes a long way. Clean the cabinets, countertops, shelves, and closet interiors before anything goes in. It is far easier to do this now than after everything is in place.
Unpack with a Plan
Do not try to do everything in one day. Focus on the rooms that matter most first — bedrooms, then bathrooms, then the kitchen. Once those are functional and comfortable, you can take your time with everything else.
Give Yourself Permission to Settle In
Here is something we tell every homeowner: your house does not have to feel perfect on day one. It takes time to turn a new house into a home. Let it happen naturally as you settle into your routines, figure out your spaces, and make it your own. That process is part of the joy.
Ready to Make Your Move?
Moving into a new home should feel exciting, not overwhelming. With the right plan, it can actually be something you enjoy — the start of a chapter worth looking forward to.
